Desirable Properties of Good Cutting Tool Material
The good cutting tool has three main basic property as following
- Wear resistance
- Hot hardness
- Toughness
1) Wear Resistance
Wear resistance property helps the tool to conserve the shape, cutting edge, and efficiency of the tool so that tool can be used for a longer period without a breakdown in its shape or cutting efficiency.
2) HOT Hardness
It is found that increasing temperature hardness decrease. The hot hardness is necessary to enable the cutting tool to protect its hardness and cutting ability at the elevated temperature due to the heat generated at the tool edge.
3) Toughness
In the machining process when the tool edges sudden contact with the work piece and generates shock. so the toughness in the cutting tool is important to withstand the cutting face to absorb shock. Toughness and hardness property are interdependent.
4) Some Other Property
- Hardenability helps to harden the material at a lower cost.
- The Grinding Ability property gives the desired shape to the tool with less difficulty.
- The cutting tool is Low Thermal Expansion good thermal conductivity so that heat generated is easily transferred.
